Leica PaveSmart 3D

Advanced Asphalt Paver Control System

Leica PaveSmart 3D opens up new dimensions in paving.  Bring 3D design data straight onto asphalt pavers, and wave goodbye to traditional setting out – the future is here.  You can now work totally independently, and more accurately, anywhere on the design surface guided by a GNSS/GPS or a robotic total station.

The Basics

Providing a precise, smooth, accurate foundation surface for new asphalt is crucial for the quality, rideability, service life and whole-life costs of the new asphalt surface.  High-precision milling is itself highly desirable as it minimises the cost of new asphalt. PaveSmart 3D precisely regulates the elevation and cross slope of the milling edge using robust sensor technology.  By integrating seamlessly with the milling machines hydraulic system, fully automatic control ensures the desired finished surface is produced with speed and precision.

Why go Stringless?

Because stringlines…

  • are expensive, time-consuming and error-prone to install
  • can be easily damaged during milling
  • can be easily misaligned can be a significant site safety hazard
  • interfere with site logistics, increase concrete delivery  time, haulage costs, and reduce productivity.
  • require pre-production planning & increase survey effort/cost
  • don’t always “model” the designed surface accurately

Benefits

Increasingly, modern roads are being re-engineered to meet higher traffic speed and axle-load demands.  Milling machines are used to remove varying depths of material, or alter the surface levels, profile and drainage characteristic of the road surface.

Traditionally this is a complex, manual process, often requiring a great deal of pre-survey, and detailed manual road-design data to be provided to the machine crew at all times.  This can lead to mistakes, over-milling and subsequently higher costs to reinstate more asphalt than is needed.

The Leica PaveSmart milling system will allow...

Re-profiling of existing surface geometries

  • Ideal for improving existing road profiles and construction layer thicknesses
  • Re-profiles elevation, cross-slope, curves etc
  • No staking-out and stringline setup errors
  • Removes existing road-surface irregularities (bumps, dishes)
  • “Perfect” milled sub-surface for new asphalt

No stakes or stringlines required

  • Reduced costs of setting out, easier site access for trucks
  • Jobs can be done in narrower work corridors
  • No waiting on surveyor, stringline crew, grade checker etc.

Increased safety

  • No ‘trip hazards’, ideal for hazardous worksites (e.g. highway lane rentals)
  • Ideal for night-time working

Working process technical advantages

3D-controlled height of 1st lane is the height reference for sideplate-height control of the next lane - Result is no “slope-error” propagation across lanes.
Sideplate-sensing ensures perfect “joint matching” for optimal asphalt overlay construction joints

Machine Compatability

Close development cooperation with Wirtgen Group, worldwide leaders in milling technology, offers you the following advantages:

  • PaveSmart 3D is the only factory-approved 3D milling system on the market today
  • Fully-integrated with all W2xxx Series milling machines
  • Supports all Wirtgen DLS and LevelPro controllers
  • No after-market hydraulics to install
  • Little or no retraining of operators – 3D works just like any other sensor

PaveSmart 3D also supports other major machine brands, via a MOBAmatic levelling system, which we can supply and install, to interface to

  • CAT/Bitelli
  • Dynapac/Svedala ( Atlas Copco )
  • ABG ( Volvo )
  • Marini
  • RoadTec
  • Sakai
